Jason Njoku holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Manchester, where he graduated in 2005.

His educational journey also included completing his A-Levels after returning to the UK from Nigeria, where he had spent part of his childhood.

Jason Njoku’s Success Journey

Jason was born on December 11, 1980, in Deptford, Southeast London.

His mother, who worked full-time for the National Health Service, raised him and his four siblings alone after their father left the family.

From the ages of 12 to 15, Njoku lived in a village in Nigeria, an experience that deepened his connection to his roots and the Nollywood film industry.

This period allowed him to appreciate the cultural richness of Nigeria, which later influenced his decision to focus on Nollywood content through iROKOtv.

After university, Njoku launched several businesses, including a student magazine (Brash), a blog network, a T-shirt business, and a web design company. Unfortunately, these ventures failed.

After his failed ventures, Njoku moved back to his mother’s home in Deptford, London.

It was during this period that he began to conceptualize a platform for distributing Nollywood films online, inspired by his mother’s request for Nigerian movies while living in the UK.

In 2010, with the financial support of his friend Bastian Gotter, Njoku secured a $3 million investment from Tiger Global, which helped launch iROKOtv in 2011.

Over time, iROKOtv rapidly gained traction, drawing viewers from 178 countries and amassing an extensive catalog of over 5,000 films.

Njoku’s vision transformed Nollywood content distribution and made it accessible globally.

He has been recognized as one of Forbes Africa’s “Ten Young African Millionaires to Watch” and received the CNBC All Africa Business Awards Young Leader of the Year for West Africa in 2013.

Jason Njoku’s Family

Jason Njoku is one of five children, raised alongside his three sisters and one brother. His mother, Mrs. Mariam Njoku, raised them all by herself while working multiple jobs.

Njoku is married to Mary Remmy Njoku, a prominent Nigerian actress, producer, and content creator. They got married on August 18, 2012, in Festac Town, Lagos.

Together, they have three children: Jason Obinna Njoku, Nwakaego Annabelle Njoku, and Amber Nnenna Njoku.

Mary Njoku is the founder of ROK Studios, which produces a wide range of original content and has become a leading producer of family-friendly entertainment in Nigeria.

She has overseen the growth of various ROK channels that air across Africa and the UK.

Jason Njoku’s Scandals

Despite his success, Njoku is no stranger to controversy.

On January 15, 2025, the Federal High Court in Lagos issued an interim order to freeze bank accounts linked to Jason Njoku amid a legal dispute with Cote Ouest Audiovisuel Maurice, a global audiovisual company.

There have been speculations regarding Njoku’s management of iROKOtv, particularly concerning alleged extravagant spending and a lack of focus on the company’s operations.

Critics have suggested that his lifestyle and travel habits may have impacted the company’s performance during a challenging period.
