Muheria attended Strathmore College for his A-levels (1979-1980) and then the University of Nairobi, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1984.

He worked at Gathaiya Njagi and Partners, an engineering consultancy firm, where he was involved in the design and supervision of structural works.

However, in 1989, Muheria felt a calling to the priesthood and left his engineering career to pursue theological studies at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

Priesthood

Muheria currently serves as the Archbishop of Nyeri, a position he has held since April 23, 2017.

He was ordained as a priest on June 13, 1993, after studying theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

Muheria’s early ministry involved pastoral work, where he focused on serving local communities and engaging in various church activities.

His episcopal career began when he was appointed as the Bishop of Embu on October 30, 2003.

During his tenure in Embu, he emphasized enhancing educational initiatives within the diocese and promoting social justice while addressing local community issues such as poverty and healthcare.

In 2008, he was appointed Bishop of Kitui, where he continued to advocate for marginalized populations and worked on improving the church’s outreach programs.

In 2017, Muheria was elevated to the role of Archbishop of Nyeri, one of Kenya’s most significant dioceses.

As Archbishop, he has been an advocate for social justice issues, including land rights and environmental conservation.

His leadership extends beyond the diocese as he plays a vital role in the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), where he chairs the Anti-Corruption Campaign Committee.

Family

Anthony Muheria is the third-born in a family of eight siblings.

Among his siblings is Patrick Njoroge, who served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya from June 19, 2015, until June 19, 2023.

Njoroge attended Mangu High School and later Strathmore College before pursuing higher education at the University of Nairobi, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Economics.

He furthered his studies at Yale University, obtaining a Ph.D. in Economics.

Before becoming Governor, Njoroge had a notable career at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he worked for over two decades in various capacities, including as an advisor to the Deputy Managing Director.
