Originally established in the early 1900s, the corridor thrived until the Angolan civil war disrupted its operations, leading to decades of underutilization.
A significant rehabilitation effort, funded by China, revitalized the Benguela Railway and extended Lobito Port, enhancing its importance for regional trade.
The project spans approximately 800 miles, providing a crucial link between Africa’s mineral-rich regions and global markets by offering access to the Atlantic Ocean.
In 2023, it began facilitating copper shipments, demonstrating its logistical advantages over traditional routes.
