Thayu Kamau: The Muranga Billionaire Behind Astrol Petroleum Company

The petroleum industry in Kenya is largely dominated by multinational corporations and a few super-wealthy individuals.

Among the notable local figures who made a mark in this industry was Thayu Kamau Kabugi, a billionaire entrepreneur hailing from Murang’a County.

He not only built a thriving petroleum company but also left an indelible mark through his philanthropy and development projects

Early life

Thayu was born in Muringu village, Murang’a County, into a humble family of three siblings.

Despite his modest beginnings, he rose to become one of the wealthiest and most influential entrepreneurs in Kenya’s petroleum industry.

Thayu was a close associate of Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

However, despite the opportunities that came with his proximity to power during Kenyatta’s regime, Thayu chose to build his wealth through sheer hard work and dedication.

He remained deeply connected to his roots and gave back to his community through various philanthropic activities and development projects in the Mount Kenya region.

In recognition of his selfless contributions, Thayu was awarded the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.

Astrol Petroleum Limited

Astrol Petroleum Limited was founded by Thayu in 2000.

Since its inception, the company has established itself as a significant player in Kenya’s petroleum industry.

It specializes in the supply and distribution of petroleum products through its network of Astrol Petrol Stations.

The company serves a diverse clientele, including motorists, power stations, agribusinesses, and industrial manufacturers.

Astrol Petroleum also offers a range of services, including the provision of fuel and lubricants, car service bays, tire centers, car washes, and convenience stores.

Over the years, the company has built a reputation for quality and reliability in the industry.

Operational footprint and employment

Astrol Petroleum has a strong presence in Kenya, operating ten filling stations strategically located in various regions, including Runda and Northern Bypass.

Others are in Thika Road, Lenana Road, Mombasa Road, Rironi, Murang’a, Athi River, Ruiru, and Utawala.

Through these stations, the company serves thousands of clients daily, making it a key player in the local petroleum market.

The company has also made significant contributions to job creation, employing over 300 individuals who work at its offices or filling stations.

Leadership transition

Thayu passed away on 20th February 2019 at Nairobi Hospital at the age of 94.

Following his passing, the leadership of Astrol Petroleum has transitioned to his son, James Mwangi, who serves as the Group Managing Director (MD).

Under his leadership, the company continues to uphold its founder’s legacy while striving for growth and innovation in Kenya and beyond.
