The visit comes at a time when the U.S. is keen to enhance its diplomatic and economic ties with African countries, especially in light of the growing influence of China on the continent.

One of the primary objectives of Biden’s visit is to reinforce diplomatic ties between the United States and Angola.

This includes discussions on various issues such as security, trade, and climate change.

A focal point of the trip is the $3 billion Lobito Corridor project, which aims to improve transportation infrastructure, facilitating trade routes for critical minerals such as cobalt and copper.

During his visit, Biden plans to engage in cultural diplomacy by visiting a slavery museum in Luanda.

This visit serves as an acknowledgment of the historical ties between the United States and Angola, particularly regarding the transatlantic slave trade.

The discussions surrounding the Lobito Corridor are expected to lead to new trade agreements that will benefit both nations economically.

Additionally, Biden’s administration will explore avenues for enhanced security cooperation, particularly in combating regional threats such as terrorism and organized crime.

The U.S. may also announce new development initiatives aimed at supporting Angola’s economic growth, infrastructure development, and health care improvements.

Lobito Corridor project

The Lobito Corridor is a strategic railway project designed to connect Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Zambia, facilitating the transportation of essential minerals like copper and cobalt.

Originally established in the early 1900s, the corridor thrived until the Angolan civil war disrupted its operations, leading to decades of underutilization.

A significant rehabilitation effort, funded by China, revitalized the Benguela Railway and extended Lobito Port, enhancing its importance for regional trade.

The project spans approximately 800 miles, providing a crucial link between Africa’s mineral-rich regions and global markets by offering access to the Atlantic Ocean.

In 2023, it began facilitating copper shipments, demonstrating its logistical advantages over traditional routes.

The U.S. government views the Lobito Corridor as a key component of its engagement strategy in Africa, positioning it as a counter to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
