Early career

After completing his education, Mwangi began working in the banking sector in the early 1980s.

His first role was at a small bank, where he gained valuable experience in various banking operations.

However, it was his tenure at Equity Building Society that marked a pivotal moment in his career.

In 1993, Mwangi joined Equity Building Society as a finance manager.

At that time, the institution was facing severe financial difficulties and was on the brink of collapse.

Recognizing the potential for transformation, Mwangi took on increasing responsibilities and eventually became the Managing Director in 2004.

Transformation of Equity Bank

Under Mwangi’s leadership, Equity Building Society underwent a remarkable transformation.

He implemented innovative strategies to enhance customer service and broaden access to banking services.

One of his key initiatives was to leverage technology to reach more customers, including introducing mobile banking and agency banking, which allowed customers to access financial services without having to visit a physical branch.

Mwangi also focused on financial literacy programs, educating customers about banking products and services.

This approach not only increased customer trust but also empowered individuals to make informed financial decisions.

As a result of these efforts, Equity Building Society transitioned into Equity Bank in 2004, marking its official entry into the commercial banking sector.

Later career and achievements

As CEO of Equity Bank, Mwangi led the institution through a period of rapid growth and expansion.

The bank became known for its commitment to financial inclusion, serving millions of clients across Kenya and beyond.

Under his leadership, Equity Bank introduced various products tailored to meet the needs of different customer segments, including smallholder farmers, women entrepreneurs, and youth.

In addition to his role at Equity Bank, Mwangi has served on various boards and committees that focus on economic development and financial inclusion.

Appointment to the World Bank council

Mwangi has been appointed to the World Bank’s High-Level Advisory Council on Jobs, aimed at addressing global job creation challenges, particularly for youth and women in emerging economies.

This council was launched during the 2024 World Bank Group-IMF annual meeting.

Mwangi expressed his commitment to leveraging the council’s expertise to support the creation of 50 million jobs in Africa by 2030, aligning with Equity Group’s Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan.
