Steven Opakrwot’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and determination, a tale that captivated the hearts of many during Kyambogo University’s 20th Graduation Ceremony.
As he proudly received his degree in Community Development and Social Justice with First-Class Honors, his achievement stood as a testament to his unwavering spirit.
Steven’s journey was far from conventional.
Initially, he aspired to study medicine at a public university in Uganda, a dream rooted in his passion for helping others.
But life took an unexpected turn when complications from a vision problem led to surgery, leaving him completely blind.
For three challenging years, Steven remained at home, his education on hold and his access to rehabilitation services limited.
In 2021, his path changed dramatically when he was referred to Kyambogo University.
There, he found a supportive environment within the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation, and joined the Visual Assistive Technology Unit, a program under the All We See is Possibility (AWSiP) initiative.
This program was a lifeline, equipping Steven with adaptive skills, assistive technologies, and the confidence to embark on a new academic journey.
At Kyambogo University, Steven flourished. The Disability Support Services Centre provided the foundation he needed to succeed, both academically and socially.
His lively personality and sharp intellect drew people to him, creating a broad circle of friends and followers.
“Steven has been a model of what determination and support can achieve,” said a representative from the Faculty of Special Needs and Rehabilitation. “His humor, intellect, and ability to connect with others have enriched our community.”
